Fluconazole (often known by the brand name Diflucan) is a widely prescribed antifungal medication. It is used to prevent and treat a variety of fungal and yeast infections.

Common uses include:

Vaginal Yeast Infections (Vaginal Candidiasis).

Oral Thrush (Oropharyngeal Candidiasis) affecting the mouth and throat.

Esophageal and Systemic Candida Infections, including blood (candidemia), urinary tract, and organ infections.

Cryptococcal Meningitis, a serious fungal infection of the brain and spinal cord (often seen in immunocompromised individuals).

Prevention (Prophylaxis): Preventing fungal infections in high-risk patients, such as those undergoing bone marrow transplants, chemotherapy, or living with HIV.

HOW IT WORKS

Fluconazole belongs to a class of medications called triazole antifungals. It works by selectively inhibiting an essential fungal enzyme (lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase).

By blocking this enzyme, the fungus cannot produce ergosterol, a vital component of its cell membrane.

Without ergosterol, the fungal membrane becomes weak, leaks, and stops growing, which ultimately kills the fungus or allows your immune system to clear the infection.

HOW TO TAKE

Fluconazole is available as oral tablets, liquid suspension, or intravenous (IV) infusion.

You can take it with or without meals.

For uncomplicated vaginal thrush, it is often prescribed as a single oral dose (typically 150 mg).

For other systemic or chronic infections, it is taken once daily. Always complete the full prescribed course, even if symptoms vanish early.

OVERDOSE

Taking an accidental extra dose is generally not life-threatening, but a significant overdose requires immediate medical attention.

Symptoms of an overdose include severe dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, extreme nausea, or paranoia. Seek emergency medical care immediately. Emergency care may involve monitoring heart rate and supporting vital functions.

MISSED DOSE

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and stay on your normal routine. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

SIDE EFFECTS

Most people tolerate Fluconazole well, but minor symptoms can occur: nausea, upset stomach, or diarrhea; headache; mild abdominal pain, dizziness or changes in taste.

Among the serious side effects are dark urine, pale stools, severe fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice); unexplained rash, peeling skin, or blistering; fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeats (QT prolongation), or severe dizziness/fainting; swelling of the face, lips, or throat, hives, or difficulty breathing.

WARNING AND PRECAUTIONS

Drug Interactions: Fluconazole interacts with many medications because it alters how your liver processes drugs. Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners (Warfarin), statins, anti-seizure drugs, diabetes medications, or heart medications.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: High doses or long-term use during the first trimester can increase the risk of birth defects or miscarriage. Single low-dose use (150 mg) for vaginal thrush should only be taken if clearly needed and advised by a physician.

Liver and Kidney Conditions: Dose adjustments are often necessary for patients with pre-existing kidney or liver disease.

Heart Conditions: Use with caution if you have a history of heart failure, slow heart rate, or a family history of long QT syndrome.

STORAGE

Store Fluconazole at room temperature below away from excess heat, light, and moisture (avoid storing in damp bathroom cabinets). Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
